Small and Fine Line Tattoos in Tbilisi — Precision Miniature Work by Ivan Tahine

Everything that you need to know before making a small tattoo in Tbilisi

Small tattoos are where precision matters most. When you're working in a 4cm space, there's no room for approximation. The needle placement, the pressure, the line speed — everything has to be controlled. A small mistake in a large tattoo can sometimes be corrected. In a small one, it's the whole tattoo.

I enjoy small work precisely because of that challenge. Here's what you should know about getting a small or fine line tattoo at my studio in Tbilisi.

What Is Fine Line Tattooing?

Fine line tattooing refers to work done with thin, precise lines rather than the bold, thick outlines of traditional tattooing. The result is delicate — minimal, almost drawn-looking, sometimes compared to pencil or pen illustration.

I work with a tight liner needle (sometimes a single needle for the most delicate work) at a controlled speed that keeps the line thin and consistent. The technique requires experience — too slow and the line blows out, too fast and it becomes uneven.

Fine line work suits:
- Minimalist symbols and icons
- Delicate botanicals and nature subjects
- Small portrait work and animal faces
- Geometric patterns at small scale
- Script and lettering (discussed more on the lettering page)
- Abstract minimal compositions

Small Tattoos: What Size Is "Small"?

The most commonly requested sizes I see:

- Tiny (under 3cm) — Single simple symbols, a small moon, a star cluster, a minimal geometric shape. Very limited on detail.
- Small (3–6cm) — The sweet spot for fine line work. Enough space for a delicate flower, a small animal, a face study.
- Medium-small (6–10cm) — Room for more complex compositions while maintaining the fine line aesthetic.

I'll always tell you honestly if a design has too much detail to work at the size you want. Some designs need to be simplified to work small — and that's fine, simplification often improves the tattoo anyway.
What Works Well Small (And What Doesn't)
Works well at small scale:
  • Bold simple shapes with clean edges
  • Single botanicals (a stem, a leaf, a simple flower)
  • Minimalist animal silhouettes
  • Single letters or very short words
  • Abstract or geometric minimal forms
  • Clean portrait studies in the 5–8cm range
Challenging at small scale:
  • Faces with lots of detail (eyes, nose, mouth in 3cm)
  • Group portraits
  • Detailed scenes with multiple elements
  • Highly detailed mandalas (the lines merge over time)
  • Any design with very thin negative space between elements
If you come in with a reference that's too complex for the size you want, I won't just try to make it fit — I'll show you what simplification would look like and we'll decide together.

Placement for Small Tattoos

Small and fine line tattoos suit almost any placement, but some locations behave better than others:

Great placements:
  • Inner wrist — Visible, stays relatively protected from sun
  • Forearm — Good canvas, heals well
  • Collarbone — Elegant, minimal
  • Ankle — Classic for small symbols
  • Behind the ear — For very simple, small designs
  • Finger — Possible, but with caveats (see below)
Placements with caveats:
  • Fingers — Finger tattoos fade faster than anywhere else. The skin is constantly in motion, exposed to sun and friction. Expect to touch up a finger tattoo within 1–3 years. I'll do them, but I tell every client this upfront.
  • Foot — Similar fading issues to fingers. Works better on the top of the foot than the sole.
  • Inner lip — I don't do these. They fade within months.

Healing Fine Line Work

Fine line tattoos require attentive aftercare in the first two weeks. The lines are thin — they sit at a specific depth in the skin, and how you treat the tattoo during healing determines how they settle.
Key points:
  • Keep the area clean and apply a thin layer of unscented moisturiser 2–3 times daily
  • Avoid sun exposure during healing (and use SPF 50+ after healing — sun is the biggest enemy of fine line longevity)
  • Don't scratch or pick at peeling skin
  • The tattoo will look slightly faded and dull while it peels — this is normal
I provide written aftercare instructions after every session and I'm available on WhatsApp if you have questions during healing.

Do Small Tattoos Need Touch-Ups?

Sometimes. Fine lines occasionally heal with small gaps or slightly uneven thickness — this is partly technique, partly how individual skin absorbs ink. If anything looks off after the healing period (4–6 weeks), I offer a free touch-up within 3 months of the session.

Pricing
Small tattoos start from $70, which covers sessions up to about 1–1.5 hours. For a quick small symbol — a moon, a simple minimal icon — the session might be 30–45 minutes. Slightly more complex fine line work (a small botanical, a small animal) typically takes 1.5–2 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do a touch-up on a fine line tattoo from another artist? Sometimes. Send me a photo of the current state and I'll give you an honest assessment. Some fine line work from other artists is salvageable, some isn't.
I want something very specific but can't find a reference. Can you design it? Yes. I enjoy that kind of brief. Describe what you want in words, tell me what the tattoo means to you, and I'll sketch something.
Do you do walk-ins? Occasionally, if there's a cancellation. But for fine line work especially, I prefer to schedule in advance so I have time to design properly. Contact me on WhatsApp and I'll let you know current availability.
