Why Dragon Tattoos Are So Demanding (And Why That Matters to You)

A dragon is one of the hardest subjects to tattoo well. Unlike a flower or a geometric pattern, a dragon has anatomy — and even though it's imaginary anatomy, it still needs to feel believable. Proportions matter. The way scales catch light matters. The sense of coiled energy or mid-flight motion matters.
I've seen a lot of dragon tattoos that look flat or stiff because the artist copied a reference without understanding what makes the creature feel alive. That's not the kind of work I do.

I work with the traditional Japanese irezumi approach — bold linework, selective black shading, the dragon moving through clouds or waves. These work best on the back, sleeve, or thigh.
Western European dragons — Heavier, more lizard-like, with wings and visible musculature. Great for clients who want something bold and imposing. These work well in black & grey with strong contrast.
Minimalist and fine-line dragons — A simpler silhouette with clean linework, often curled around a forearm or wrist. Elegant rather than dramatic. I use a single needle or tight liner for these.

How Much Does a Dragon Tattoo Cost?
Dragon tattoos are priced by time. My rate is negotiated per piece based on complexity and estimated hours. A small minimalist dragon (2–3 hours) starts from $140. A large sleeve panel or back piece is quoted after the consultation when we know the full scope.
I don't rush work to lower cost, and I don't pad sessions either. You get the time the piece actually needs.

Working with Tattoo Tourists
A significant share of my dragon clients come specifically to Tbilisi for the tattoo — from Israel, Germany, Japan, and across Europe. If you're planning a trip around your session, I can help you plan the timing. Large pieces can be split across a stay of several days.
My studio is a private space at 11/102 Zurab Chavchavadze St, a 10-minute walk from Marjanishvili metro. There's no public waiting room — it's just you, me, and the work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you work from photos or pure reference? Neither, exactly. I design original pieces. References help me understand your taste and direction, but the final stencil is drawn from scratch for your body shape and placement.
Can I get a dragon in colour? I primarily work in black & grey, which is my strongest skill. If you have a specific colour vision, let's talk — I can work with a coloured dragons or Japanese style as well.
